Me Versus Society

“Self Love XoXo” by AC Williams

My friends would always say that my body belongs to the category of “Easy to lose weight, Easy to gain weight” and I would always disagree. Why? Simply because my body type will and shall never be categorized.

They would criticize my love for eating and I would always pay no attention to them, because I love eating! but not to the point where I eat everything in excessive amounts, I just don’t let myself starve. I will never like the idea that someone should starve their self until they pass out just to step into society’s standards of beauty.

Society will always say that you should be skinny but not too skinny, or they’ll accuse you of anorexia, you should be flawless but not too flawless or they’ll hate you, you shouldn’t have any stretch marks because having stretch marks equates to you killing a person, no pimples, no blackheads, no whiteheads, no bad hair day–the list goes on! It tells us about a lot of things that we shouldn’t have but what we don’t know is that while we are following the list, we are somewhat losing ourselves just to feel that we belong. We are losing who we are. Our identities are getting discarded because we have to be someone else to feel the acceptance that we think we need.

You see, it’s making us hate ourselves, simply because these unreachable standards are now becoming a basic guideline on how a human being should be in a world full of intangible flaws. We are constricting every human being of being human by judging how they look, how they walk, how they talk, how they laugh, how they squint their eyes, how they function–how they live! And it is wrong! It is inhumane to make a person feel inadequate of being themselves!

So, I am writing this now to tell you that you shouldn’t let society tell you who you should be and what you should look like. Do not let society limit you in living your life to the fullest. Self-appreciation is important in this modern world where online shaming will always be considered okay. Do not let anyone tell you that you are doing too much of anything. Do what you want because in the end it is your life, it is your journey, it is your story to tell!
